India's Reliance Jio Infocomm has announced plans to launch a FTTH broadband service to shake up the fixed line market the same way it shook up the wireless market.

The operator announced plans to launch the JioGigaFiber branded service during its AGM yesterday, Firstpost reported.

As implied, the JioGigaFiber service will offer speeds of up to 1Gbps, far ahead of India's average broadband speeds.

Subscribers to JioGigaFiber will also be able to subscribe to Jio GigaTV, a set-top box service that will allow for media sharing and VoIP calls, as well as 4K virtual reality streaming.

Jio plans to offer free installation of the fiber line, and has promised to make services available within an hour where the network has rolled out, the Financial Express reported. But the company has not yet announced service plans or pricing.

Jio plans to roll out the service to as many as 1,100 cities across India.
