MWC 2022 saw the signing of an agreement between Telecom Egypt (TE) and AFR-IX Telecom regarding the construction of a landing station in Egypt for the Medusa submarine cable system.
Telecom Egypt is Egypt’s first integrated telecom operator and one of the largest subsea cable operators in the region. AFR-IX Telecom is an internet service provider based in Spain that delivers internet and data services to enterprises, international carriers and telecommunication operators in Africa and offers connectivity solutions to hundreds of clients.
The length of the Medusa submarine cable system is 8,760 km. It contains 24 pairs of fibres with a capacity of 20 terabytes per second for each pair. It is intended to be established to link countries on the Mediterranean through 16 landing points passing through several countries, including Spain, Algeria, France, Tunisia, Italy, Greece and Egypt.
Medusa is a new generation submarine cable and follows the open cable standard. As such, the project aims to respond to the current challenges of submarine connections, which include establishing new routes to diversify and decongest data traffic, gaining capacity with greater number of fibres per cable, and promoting open access to all European landing stations.
The agreement was signed by Adel Hamed, managing director and CEO of TE, and Norman Albi, the CEO of AFR-IX Telecom and Medusa.
